Statement from Houston Airports Director of Aviation regarding traffic incident, delays on August 11
August 12, 2024
As Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, I apologize for the extended delay, frustration and lack of communication our passengers experienced while exiting the IAH Terminal C/D/E Garage Sunday night, August 11.
In addition to expected peak traffic, there was an auto/pedestrian accident at the exit of the IAH Terminal C/D/E Garage. This accident required emergency response vehicles, which blocked one of the two exit lanes for an extended period of time. This incident, unfortunately, caused an unavoidable and significant delay exiting the parking garage. One person was transported to the hospital.

We are aware that customers experienced delays exiting the garage for up to two hours.
Houston Airports strives to deliver a world-class guest experience, and we did not accomplish that last night.
In anticipation of more flights and more passengers at Bush Airport this summer, Houston Airports:
• Hired more people to direct traffic along our roads and throughout our parking garages.
• Added more law enforcement officers and extended their hours to direct traffic and control traffic lights.
• Added a dedicated Exit Lane for the IAH Terminal C/D/E Garage.
• Dispatched parking attendants on all six levels of the IAH Terminal C/D/E Garage to meter exiting traffic so that customers parked on upper floors were not at a disadvantage to customers parked on lower floors when exiting during peak travel periods.
• Added signage on all six levels of the IAH Terminal C/D/E Garage which notify customers of “heavy roadway traffic, please expect delays exiting the garage.”
• Began messaging traffic impacts of peak travel days – which includes Sundays.
• Initiated announcements in IAH Terminals inviting passengers to take their time departing the airport during peak periods.
Presently, Terminal E has a temporary, single lane international arrivals curb which contributes to traffic congestion. Passengers will experience a noticeable improvement in January 2025, when the new international arrivals curb opens, offering 8 lanes for passenger pickup.
