The colorful and colossal artwork sculpted by Texas artist David Adickes will welcome passengers to Houston during a year-long exhibit.
HOUSTON—Houston-based artist David Adickes installed his massive We Love Houston, Too sculpture on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). The sculpture is now on display for one year along the Arrivals Curb, which is on the airport's lower level.
We Love Houston, Too is one of two works in the We Love Houston sculpture series. The cement, canvas, steel and panel sculpture measures 30 feet wide, 16.5 feet tall and 6 feet deep. The work of art is anchored to a guardrail-protected, skylight-covered concrete island in the outdoor promenade that connects the HOU Arrivals Curb to the Red Parking Garage—the perfect selfie spot!
“Art is an essential part of the passenger experience, transforming our airports into cultural gateways that reflect the vibrant spirit of Houston. As the only 5-Star Skytrax-rated airport in North America, Hobby Airport is a shining example of world-class hospitality," said Alton DuLaney, curator of public art for Houston Airports. "As the home of the World’s Best Airport Art Program, Houston Airports is honored to showcase the iconic work of David Adickes—because we love Houston, too. This installation ensures every passenger is welcomed with the warmth and character that define our global city.
Adickes, who celebrated his 98th birthday this month, found the collaboration a fitting way to toast a monumental year—and life—of creating artwork for all.
“People deserve something fun yet lasting to enjoy,” said artist David Adickes. “The We Love Houston, Too, work is one of my ‘love letters’ to Houston, and it makes for the ultimate selfie-station, from what my granddaughters and lots of Houston arts fans have said!”
As part of the collaboration between Adickes and Houston Airports, the taller and similar work, known as We Love Houston, is slated to move from East Downtown to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) later this year.
