Houston Airports experienced its second busiest single day of travel - ever- on June 6, 2024, according to data from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which processed 83,796 passengers through its checkpoints at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). 

The significant increase in passenger traffic on June 6 aligns with the last day of school for nearly 190,000 Houston ISD students - June 5 - marking the official start of summer vacation. TSA throughput refers to the number of passengers screened by Transportation Security Administration officers at airport security checkpoints. This metric is a key indicator of passenger volume at airports nationwide.

Thursday, June 6 falls just short of the single busiest day of the year recorded by Houston Airports, which was Friday, March 8, 2024, when 84,295 passengers were screened by TSA at Bush and Hobby airports. Notably, March 8th coincided with the peak of Spring Break travel. 

A Surge in Summer Travel

The high travel volume on June 6 strongly indicates a busy and record-setting summer travel season. The 2024 summer forecast is a 7% increase in passenger traffic compared to the summer of 2023. 

More than 14.6 million passengers are expected at Bush Airport, and more than 4.3 million are anticipated at Hobby Airport. Most travelers are expected to board domestic flights. Peak travel days this summer will be Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.
