Members of the Houston Airports Maintenance Team volunteered their time Friday, April 19, 2024, at an Earth Day event focused on electronic waste recycling. 

"We are proud of our Maintenance Team for taking the initiative to give back to the community and support a cause that is important to our city and our environment," said Tanisha Smith, Division Manager of Maintenance for Houston Airports. "Sustainability is among the strategic priorities of Houston Airports, and we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact."

The event, organized by IFMA Houston, provided a platform for Houston-area residents to responsibly dispose of unwanted electronics. Houston Airports Maintenance played a vital role in the event's success at CompuCycle in West Houston, assisting with the collection and sorting of electronic waste. More than 100,000 pounds of e-waste was collected and saved from Houston landfills. 

That's the equivalent of 382 refrigerators or nine elephants. The impact is much greater:

• 240.92 lbs. of toxic metals diverted
• Reduction of 45.37 metric tons of greenhouse gas
• Saved 383.72 gallons of oil
• Like removing nearly 10 cars from the road
• 293.60 cubic yards of landfill space saved
• 3,736,637.20 hours of electricity saved
