Houston Airports employees find unique, meaningful way to honor U.S. Military

Houston Airport Custodians worked overnight to  deep clean USO at Bush Airport ahead of Memorial Day holiday weekend.

As Memorial Day approaches, Houston Airports recognizes the importance of honoring those who have and are serving our country. This year, members of the Terminal D 3rd shift Custodial team at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) went above and beyond to ensure a world-class experience for service members and their families visiting the USO (United Service Organizations).

The USO is a private, nonprofit organization that provides critical support and services to active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their families. Founded in 1941, the USO has a long history of providing a "home away from home" for those serving in the United States Armed Forces. USO centers offer a variety of amenities at airports nationwide, including relaxation areas, snacks, beverages, and entertainment.

“We are incredibly grateful for the service and sacrifice of our nation’s service members,” said Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports. “The USO plays a vital role in supporting our military community, and I am proud Houston Airports employees delivered a comfortable and welcoming space for these American heroes as they fly through Bush Airport."

In the spirit of Memorial Day, a Houston Airports overnight Custodial team assigned to IAH Terminal D dedicated a shift to deep cleaning the USO. This meticulous cleaning included scrubbing and extracting carpets and upholstered chairs, polishing tables and furniture, dusting blinds and vents, cleaning floor protectors and stainless steel and buffing tile floors. The team's efforts ensure a fresh and inviting environment for service members and their families visiting the USO this holiday weekend.

“To our entire third shift team, thank you for taking the time and supporting the USO,” wrote Andrew Czobor, Assistant Director of Airport Operations at IAH. “The place looks great thanks to your care and hard work.  You guys are fantastic. We so appreciate you!”

Members of the IAH Terminal D Third Shift Custodial Team included Terrance Lavone, Berhane Coombs and Terrance Ford. The trio share that they found deep-cleaning the USO in honor of Memorial Day particularly meaningful. They understand that the USO offers a place of relaxation and respite for military members and their families, and they are proud to do their part to honor those who have served. Once the work was completed, each member of the team signed a card thanking service members and their families for their devotion to the country, which comes at a personal sacrifice. The card included the message, “we hope you like the results.”

The team hopes that their efforts will create a welcoming environment where veterans and their families can feel appreciated.

“You all are always amazing! Thank you so much for doing this,” said Espiridion Zuniga, Senior Center Operations Specialist for USO-Houston in an email to Houston Airports. “Our appreciation for you all goes beyond words!”
