Houston Airports employees came together to assist families who survived the deadly Midwest tornadoes that left a trail of devastation across six states in early December, claiming nearly 90 lives, including dozens of Kentucky residents. In the spirit of helping those in need, a donation drive was organized at Bush, Hobby and Ellington airports. Employees donated diapers, baby wipes, toiletries and pet food to send to those most in need.
Mayor Sylvester Turner partnered with Gallery Furniture and Kroger Houston to collect and ship items to the Midwest. Mayor Turner also asked all departments and all employees to collect items that could be donated to people who survived the catastrophic tornadoes.
“As good corporate neighbors, we provided items to support the relief efforts for victims of the deadly tornadoes in the Midwest, “said Rhonda Arnold, HAS Chief Community Relations and Business Affairs Officer.
"Many families lost everything they had, including their homes, businesses, and loved ones,” Mayor Turner said in a statement. “By coming together and partnering with local businesses, Houstonians can be more effective in our outpouring of support."
In total, more than 80 people died across Kentucky due to the tornadoes, which first touched down Dec. 11, according to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. The Biden Administration made a disaster declaration for the state on Dec. 13.
"Houston is a great city with a reputation as a caring city. The entire city of Houston has rallied around the people of Kentucky, and it has re-established my faith in humanity to see how many people drove out here to bring supplies. As always, Houston steps up to help people in need," said Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale.
