For the second year in a row, George Bush Intercontinental Airport was recognized as one of the most efficient airports in the world when measuring on-time performance for arriving and departing flights.
In the 2019 OAG Punctuality League report, published annually by the respected travel analyst group, Bush Airport came in sixth among “major” airports, defined as facilities that provide service for 20 to 30 million departing passengers per year.
Bush, which also ranked sixth in the category last year, posted an on-time performance rate for arrivals and departures of 82.26 percent in 2018, the third-best rate among the 11 U.S. airports listed in the Top 20 of the worldwide “major” airport rankings.
“Providing excellent customer service takes a real commitment, and it takes great partnerships,” Houston Aviation Director Mario C. Diaz said. “The commitment to make sure our passengers and customers can count on getting to and from their destinations on time is one the Houston Airport System and our air carrier partners take very seriously. We will continue to strive, not to merely maintain but also improve on that commitment every day. This rating is a great recognition, but it’s not the end of our work — it’s just the beginning.”
The 82.26 percent rate for Bush Airport was the best among the Texas airports listed in the OAG Punctuality League categories, including San Antonio, which was No. 20 among “medium” airports (5 to 10 million departing passengers) at 80.41 percent, and Dallas-Fort Worth, which was No. 7 among “mega” airports (30-plus million departing passengers) at 78.23 percent.
The ratings of the OAG Punctuality League is based on 58 million flight records using full-year data from 2018 to create a ranking of the best on-time performance for the world’s largest airlines and airports. To qualify for inclusion in the Punctuality League, the OAG schedules database must have flight status data for at least 80 percent of all scheduled flights operated by an airline or for an airport. OAG’s definition of on-time performance is flights that arrive or depart within 14 minutes and 59 seconds (under 15 minutes) of their scheduled arrival/departure times. Cancellations are also included.
