Nobody likes to wait. And Houston Airports realizes that and has partnered with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on ways to make the security wait times shorter for passengers in Houston.
Data compiled by both by the TSA and Houston Airports shows more than 90 percent of travelers get through the mandated security check points in 10 minutes or less, more often than not. The average wait time at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is 6.24 minutes and at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is 5.13 minutes. This data is an average of all days in 2018, not a sampling of time periods.
Over the past two years, through a strong partnership with the TSA, Houston Airports rolled out processes to make the security wait time shorter.
Those processes include:
Automated bin retrieval
- The bins go through the X-ray machine and, after items are removed, return to the beginning of the line. This means TSA officers don’t divert attention from security to collecting containers.
Automated Screening Lanes Terminals D and E
- The lanes enhance overall security effectiveness by using technology to better track passenger property throughout the screening process. They also increase both operational efficiency and the passenger experience by automating some of the functions that were previously done manually.
Passengers can access in the current security checkpoint wait time at IAH here /iah/depart/ or HOU here /hou/depart/.
