Houston Fire Department opens new ARFF-92 station at IAH

Feb 6, 2026

HFD ARFF 92 at IAHHOUSTON — The Houston Fire Department has opened a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting station at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), strengthening emergency response capabilities at one of the nation’s busiest airports.

A grand opening celebration was held Feb. 6 for ARFF-92, a 21,000-square-foot facility that replaces the former HFD Fire Station 92. The station is strategically positioned with direct access to the airfield, ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) response time requirements.

“This gives the firefighters the nice facility that they deserve because they’re extremely important to the aviation system, because the aviation system is run on trust,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “The passengers trust that we’re going to make everything as safe as possible so they have a great journey, and that includes the firefighters here. If they have to respond, they can get immediately right up to that runway and rescue people and save lives.”

Station 92 is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is one of three Houston Fire Department stations serving Bush Airport, alongside Stations 96 and 54. The new facility includes six apparatus bays, administrative and fire inspector offices, dormitories, a shared kitchen and dining area, storage and locker space and direct access to the airfield.

The project was funded through a combination of federal and Houston Airports investment. In December 2023, IAH and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) each received $15 million from the FAA to demolish and reconstruct existing ARFF buildings.

Houston Airports also invested $4.6 million from its Airport Improvement Fund to provide four new state-of-the-art ARFF vehicles for the Houston Fire Department. These specialized trucks are equipped with high-capacity pumps capable of delivering up to 1,200 gallons of water per minute and use synthetic fluorine-free foam to reduce environmental impact.
