When you think of an airport, you think of airplanes, flight attendants, security lines, maybe some unique shopping opportunities - but, hay? These days big round bales and neatly stacked squares of hay can be seen from the roads at both George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Ellington Field. It started as part of an employee suggestion program with an idea to use the open land around IAH and EFD to grow and sell hay.

Massages, pedicures, manicures, facials and most anything else you would find at your average spa are now available at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Inaugurated this month, the new XpresSpa at Terminal D is the latest addition to the growing list of airport amenities at IAH. Ensuring customer satisfaction with a positive airport experience is the ultimate goal.

June 2008 e-Newsletter
Continuing its tradition of piloting important new transportation initiatives, the Houston Airport System, this month, welcomed the United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff at George Bush Intercontinental Airport's expansive Federal Inspections Services facility. Secretary Chertoff flew in to Houston to kick-off the Department of Homeland Security's latest transportation initiative known as the Global Entry Program.

Beginning on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, Cathay Pacific Airways will launch three weekly, all-cargo flights to Hong Kong from Houston. This historic new service will mark the first scheduled all cargo service to Hong Kong from Houston and will become the fourth scheduled Asian, all cargo service from George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Terminal “B” is in for a brave move. It was a step up and be counted moment as Continental Airlines and the Houston Airport System broke the news about plans for the $1.2 billion renovation project at George Bush Intercontinental Airport’s Terminal B during an announcement that generated widespread excitement and media coverage.

Qatar Airways today announced plans to strengthen its presence in North America by adding the southern US city of Houston to its growing international network later this year. Beginning November 10, the Doha-based airline will launch three flights a week non-stop to Houston using its brand new Boeing 777-200 Long Range aircraft. Frequency will rise to daily a few weeks later in December 2008.

Just two months after inaugurating historical new service from Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport, Emirates Airlines began operating, this month, the first of four additional weekly flights. As of February 1, 2008, the carrier now offers daily nonstop service to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Fueling this rapid and considerable growth was the airline’s impressive performance to date.

The city’s total international trade reached $162 billion in 2006, and since then it has become the 4th largest customs trade district in the nation. According to Houston Mayor Bill White, the city has experienced tremendous growth over the last four years and is poised to continue growing in 2008.

Two new exotic destinations are being added to the travel menu at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, as Singapore Airlines announces new passenger service to Moscow, Russia and Singapore. Starting on March 20, 2008, the airline will offer four weekly nonstop flights to Moscow from IAH with continuing service to Singapore, adding two new destinations to the more than 70 international destinations already served from Houston.

With today’s inaugural flight, EVA Air Cargo becomes the third Asian carrier offering scheduled all-cargo service from George Bush Intercontinental Airport. As the Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft made its way past the water arch setup by one of the Houston Airport System’s three aircraft rescue firefighting stations at Bush Intercontinental, the crowd at the IAH CargoCenter grew anxious with anticipation.

Taiwan-based EVA Air Cargo, has announced it will operate two weekly freighter flights between Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Taipei, starting on November 1st. The new scheduled service will use a Boeing 747-400 freighter and will be routed through Anchorage, Alaska on its departure from IAH, before landing in Taipei. EVA Air Cargo is now the third Asian carrier offering scheduled freighter service at IAH.

A new service scheduled to takeoff in January of 2008 will offer a new level of connectivity between Aberdeen and the energy capital of the world: Houston, Texas. Air carrier City Star Executive announced, this week, that next year it will launch the first ever intercontinental business-only scheduled service between the two cities. When it comes to promising futures, it seems Houston’s airports definitely have one. At least that's what the nation’s top credit rating institutions are saying after having reviewed the Houston Airport System’s (HAS) current economic standing. According to three reports, released last month, from Standard & Poor’s, Fitch Ratings and Moody’s Investors Service HAS received top-honors for its current financial standing.

Introducing the new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner airplane, touted as the next generation mid-sized aircraft that can fly the long haul international routes, like the big jets, all while using 20 percent less fuel. Eventually national boundaries would cease to exist – at least for the aviation industry. If international air carriers get their way, open skies agreements would deregulate the aviation industry and open it up to free competition among private companies. The ultimate winner, they say, is the passenger who would end up paying less money per ticket.

According to the latest Air Travel Price Index study conducted by the United States Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a division of the Department of Trasnportation, Hobby Airport passengers are paying up to $100 less than at other airports across the nation. The study, which is a measure of actual fares paid by travelers over time, found that the average passenger at Hobby paid about $277.46 per ticket.

For years Bush Intercontinental Airport has been accommodating the Antonov 225 - now the airport is ready for the Airbus A380. Air France has scheduled a flight from Paris to Mexico City in the near future. Under certain circumstances such as bad weather or an emergency in flight, the A380 would land at Houston's IAH.

Starting on March 30, 2007 on-airport parking customers at George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports will have a new easy payment option available. That option is the use of the Harris County Toll Road Authority’s EZ TAG to pay for parking at the airports. Working in conjunction with HCTRA, the Houston Airport System will designate EZ TAG lanes at both airports.

Houston is only months away from historic air service between Bush Intercontinental Airport and Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. The airline has announced it will begin the new passenger service in December of 2007.

As we enter 2007, cargo is still hot business and Korean Airlines is grabbing a piece of the action by joining the service providers at Bush Intercontinental Airport. Twice a week service by Korean Air Lines Co. Ltd. is scheduled to begin Jan. 25th.

Really fast; all 14 wheels on the newest aircraft flown by Lufthansa are making a beeline towards George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) – the longest passenger aircraft in the world is now being operated by Lufthansa. The Airbus A340-600 is making a debut at Bush Intercontinental just in time for an anticipated, record holiday season.

With this new service the carrier becomes the first Asian airline offering scheduled passenger and cargo service to Houston. Shorter delivery times and increased revenues were on the minds of those in attendance at the celebratory luncheon put together by the Houston Airport System, yesterday, in honor of China Airlines’ new all-cargo service to Bush Intercontinental Airport.

JetBlue received a warm Texas welcome this month at William P. Hobby Airport in celebration of their new non-stop service between Houston Hobby and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The celebration began as the first JetBlue plane arrived to Gate 55 with a traditional water arch display from the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter Station 81 at Hobby.

Just halfway through the year, passenger traffic at Houston’s airports is up by 2 million more travelers than in 2005. At this rate, another 4 million passengers will bring 2006’s total traffic numbers for the year to an all time high – 52 million. Freight poundage is also up at the Houston Airport System.

What gives, asked a Dallas Morning News aviation reporter in a recent
edition of his publication, referring to the fact that last year Houston’s
largest airport registered a 9 percent increase in international
passenger traffic and surpassed other major airports around the globe
– including hot Asian airports such as Singapore’s – as the fourth
-fastest growing airport in the world.

An improved air service to India would help more than 68,000 people
of Indian origin in Houston better link to their homeland. A 16-member
team of the Greater Houston Partnership recently traveled to this
South Asian country to make the case for direct air service between
Houston and India.

Making sure that Houston's largest airport is always prepared for even
the most dire of circumstances, the fire fighters at Bush
Intercontinental recently participated in a two-week emergency
response preparedness training. The training included table-top exercises for major incidents.

The Federal Aviation Administration, Texas Airports Development
Office has selected the Houston Airport System as Airport of the Year
for 2005. Among the reasons for this accolade were the airport
system's capital improvement program, its overall global importance
and the aid it rendered to neighboring airports during Hurricanes Rita
and Katrina

services offered at Bush Intercontinental. With a recently-unveiled
new look and the same great value for on-airport parking, the city’s
economy lot is now known as Parking Cents.
