If international air carriers get their way, open skies agreements would deregulate the aviation industry and open it up to free competition among private companies. The ultimate winner, they say, is the passenger who would end up paying less money per ticket.

According to the latest Air Travel Price Index study conducted by the United States Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a division of the Department of Trasnportation, Hobby Airport passengers are paying up to $100 less than at other airports across the nation. The study, which is a measure of actual fares paid by travelers over time, found that the average passenger at Hobby paid about $277.46 per ticket.

For years Bush Intercontinental Airport has been accommodating the Antonov 225 - now the airport is ready for the Airbus A380. Air France has scheduled a flight from Paris to Mexico City in the near future. Under certain circumstances such as bad weather or an emergency in flight, the A380 would land at Houston's IAH.

Starting on March 30, 2007 on-airport parking customers at George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports will have a new easy payment option available. That option is the use of the Harris County Toll Road Authority’s EZ TAG to pay for parking at the airports. Working in conjunction with HCTRA, the Houston Airport System will designate EZ TAG lanes at both airports.

Houston is only months away from historic air service between Bush Intercontinental Airport and Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. The airline has announced it will begin the new passenger service in December of 2007.

JetBlue received a warm Texas welcome this month at William P. Hobby Airport in celebration of their new non-stop service between Houston Hobby and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The celebration began as the first JetBlue plane arrived to Gate 55 with a traditional water arch display from the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter Station 81 at Hobby.

Just halfway through the year, passenger traffic at Houston’s airports is up by 2 million more travelers than in 2005. At this rate, another 4 million passengers will bring 2006’s total traffic numbers for the year to an all time high – 52 million. Freight poundage is also up at the Houston Airport System.
